BooServer Credits

Sep 24 2007, 20:55

The BooServer project is greatly indebted to the myriad of highly skilled talented programmers of the open source community.

We were going to credit all those involved in the reliant technology's and programmes from Linus Torvalds (Linux) up, (we may yet..)

For the moment however, we can express our sincerest gratitude to the makers of systems & languages we have relied on heavily to build this network..

(..if you meet anyone involved in these projects or programmes, shake them warmly by the hand and pat them on the back):

Linux Debian project, MySQL, PHP, Adobe Photoshop, On2 Technologies, whoever invented Notepad, the PuTTy interface, Command Line (it's a sinch)..

A couple of named individuals deserve a special mention too..

Namely:
Jeroen Wijering and the the whole JW forum for the player and support, fantastic. Stu Nicholls for his CSS wisdom, Chris Southam for all his early work, and Thomas Fuchs for the scriptaculous library ..what a nice thing.

There's lots more but these people are great.

..the credits continue.

Why is it called BooServer?

Sep 24 2007, 14:54

BooServer stands for
"Boolean
Networked
Server"

it's what it is ..So (call us simple) we've just called it what it is..

In fact all servers could be described as boolean networked servers, boolean is the term given for binary logic (or noughts and ones).

Where we've taken it further however is to apply the principals to the site itself.

Boolean logic allows complex things to be derived from a network of simple true or false statements.

And there's little that's more complex and intricately woven than music, film and the gamut of human expression.

There's no star ratings, and no such thing as good and bad .. what value a piece of music or film has is entirely dependent on the network of people surrounding it.

A million viewers doesn't make something good, and if two people like the same song, that'll take a lot to beat.

So we've built the framework so that the content on it is valued by the network that surrounds it, and pretty much nothing else.

..we just make it so you can hear it and see it - the rest is up to you.

So we named it in honour of the inventor of boolean logic, and the grandfather of computing, George Boole..(pic) ..a man venerated amongst his friends for his quiet modesty and diligence.

Hello and welcome to BooServer..!

Sep 24 2007, 21:26

After 12 months of solid programming, and much burning of the midnight oil, it's time to pull off the dust covers, and pull this baby out into the light and see how she looks..

Projects such as this often tend to take on a life of their own, and rarely end up how you imagined them in the first place, ..So where did we start out..?

..Our aim was to find a better way to distribute, deliver and finance media, ..film, music, news, documentaries.

We wanted a platform that allowed audiences to engage, influence and partake in the creation of mainstream headline media, one that didn't rely on massive marketing budgets, and one that enabled a more transparent, less corporate means of financing music, film and news delivery..

So we've made this.. it's called BooServer. It's a global network server that allows the transmission and spread of digital media worldwide. And it enables personal and social promotion of works so the best rises to the top..

The technologies and facilities it involves stand on the shoulders of dedicated programmers only whose skill and inventiveness have made a project like this possible, and BooServer is heavily indebted to the good-will and nature of the open source community of developers the most significant of which (in this case) are credited below..

We have put an immense amount of thought into creating an application that allows the content maker to be free to make what they want, for media to be spread unhindered, and for the makers to be remunerated in new and inventive ways.

BooServer provides the platform, the stage, for the distribution and proliferation of media...

..so we're opening it up!

We think we've got a pretty good application on our hands, but only you can tell us where we've got it right and what you'd do differently if you were making it..

..which if we've got anything to do with it, we hope, you already are..
