Frequently Asked Questions
It's a Boolean Media Server & Store -
..in short it's joined-up media.
BooServer enables recording artists, news & film makers to sell and distribute their tracks and feeds DIRECT around the world...
Audiences can get exclusive stuff direct from the makers - PLUS you can get feeds which are live linked to the maker's projects so their releases appear in your player the instant they hit the server - so not only will you see stuff here FIRST, but all your tracks are stored in your private online collection to re-download or stream wherever you are!
Media was once done by the few delivering messages to the many.. that's all changed.
Now (thank goodness!) the many are communicating with the many and the landscape has altered dramatically.
So BooServer scrumples up the rule book and says "lets just meet up and see what we can make..!"
The 5 Points of BooServer
We wanted..
1...somewhere we could upload our music & films to that wasn't really "owned" by anyone.
2...to make it easier to share and spread visions & ideas world-wide.
3...to make it easier to deliver messages & news direct from the horses mouth.
4...to make it easier for people to connect, communicate and collaborate on great works.
5...to enable the creators of the esoteric, the inventive & the enlightening to be supported & remedy the feast or famine setup that characterised 20th Century artistic endeavour.
This is what we came up with - see how far we've stuck to our principles!

BooServer is a global media server network that enables you to publish and distribute high-res media across the world - instantly. It's also social because through it you can communicate, support, comment, collaborate, debate, forward, meet and engage direct with creators, fans and detractors alike.
Well first, your BooServer pages are entirely yours.. no advert clutter. Next, you can actually use BooServer to make a living. Third, there's no limit to the number or quality of tracks and video you upload. And, you can sell your downloads and feeds (or give them away and send them to people).
Fairly uniquely, you can also sponsor-fund your work as you get 100% of the ad-revenue for your pages. For this we've created a method called Peeps or peer sponsors, whereby anyone can buy a little promo spot on someone's page.
The BooServer business model has been carefully designed to avoid conflicts of interests. At BooServer we charge for delivery of media and unique URLs only, unless you wish to use BooServerExtra in which case we will quote on specific projects.
Unique URLs are currently £3 each - that's a one-off payment not a rental or anything. We charge for them just so people getting names only register names they actually need or want to use
Delivery of media is measured in Beeps. 1 Beep is 1 play (or download) of a 5MB track. You just buy a bucket of Beeps upfront from BooServer and then use them as you wish. E.g. you could use them to show a free-to-air sponsored concert or deliver a high-resolution paid download of the same event.
The more Beeps you buy the cheaper they get. So the most expensive bucket we sell is £5 for 1,000 Beeps. i.e. you could broadcast an average mp3 1,000 times for £5. Sell each track for 10p and you make a profit of £95. Everything else is free. This means that you can set yourself in minutes with your own portal from which you can start trading and interacting.
No..! BooServer enables artists, film-makers and news-makers to be supported how they like, whether by sponsors through carrying ads in their feeds or by fans and subscribers buying downloads, extra content and feeds.
Publishers can even be supported by micro-patrons buying links on their page. So the only adverts you will see will be other content-makers who are paying to advertise on someone else's page, or advertising partners chosen by the artist, in the safe knowledge that they receive 100% of the advertising revenue.
Yes, it's free to browse the full BooServer Network. It's also free to create an audience account so that you can store all your tracks online and access your collection from any computer that has a broadband connection.
Good question! We simply charge for the delivery of media, which is our main cost. It means we can deliver a world-class media distribution service on behalf of all publishers, who can then sell downloads and subscriptions direct.. or they can sponsor-fund their work and deliver free-to-air streams.
No strings attached. BooServer is a service for the very best publishers.. And through the peep system you can even sponsor their delivery! It'll cost you 0.5p or less to sponsor a full download of a 5MB track (1 beep).
No, you just turn up and play!
1. You can collect online from the Artists, News-makers & Film-makers on the BooServer Network
2. You can upload your own created albums or films
To collect feeds you simply click the link in the top left hand corner of the screen “Add to My Boo +”. It's always there for you wherever you are on the Network. - Click the "my boo" tab to expand & view your bookmarks, or your homepage dashboard to view your publisher widgets.
Yes, it's free to browse BooServer or to setup an account so that you can access your collection from any computer that has a broadband connection.
If you don't have an account your collection will be stored on the computer you've been using only, no other computer. With an account your collection is stored centrally so you can access it anywhere at anytime with a broadband connection.
No. We've got absolutely no interest in your personal data whatsoever. Obviously to register you need a unique identifier, so that's your name and email address. Beyond that we just need you to choose a password. Any payments are made through PayPal so we never ever see any other personal details.
Beeps are the BooServer currency. Think of each Beep as a blank tape with 5MB of recording space on it for any sort of digital media. Every time someone downloads a 5MB track to their computer it uses up 1 Beep. When it's on their computer no more Beeps are used up for each listen. But, if it's streamed but not downloaded, every time someone listens to the whole track 1 Beep will be used.
Peeps are what turn Beeps, or blank tapes, into something much more interesting… a piece of media to be enjoyed by other Peeps. So we term Peeps as the makers and the audience, or collectively the people that make BooServer work.
Either you can contact them directly on the Network or you can buy them some Beeps so that they can deliver their stuff for free, or make 100% profit on certain sales...
Easy! All you have to do is go to the “get our beeps” link on the artists page, towards the top left of the page. Click and follow the instructions!
Your collection size is theoretically unlimited... but this is within reason. We reserve the right to change this at any point in time if this gets out of control.
No – you buy what you want, simple as that. We think you may buy lots of stuff because our aim is to enable all artists to sell at a really reasonable price to you and still make money!
BooServer has been specifically designed to enable publishers and artists to get revenue through lots of different ways... And specifically built for a more sponsor-funded future for music and film – if what we think now becomes reality then much of the vast range of quality music and film on BooServer will be free and sponsor-funded
Yes. BooServer has been specifically designed to enable you to publish your music, film or programmes, and get up to 100% of the revenues due for your work
Yes, you can sell all downloads automatically from your pages
No, we don't take a cut.
You get 100% of the revenue for downloads and feeds.
Once you've uploaded your tracks and films, just enter your PayPal account email and all the payment buttons on your page will point to that account.
You can start taking payments straight away. ..We've chosen PayPal as the payment processor so your audience can then use a credit card OR their own PayPal account to pay, and also because PayPal is probably the worlds largest and most highly respected Online Payment Processor
No! Your pages are entirely your own!
Each of your project pages' are equipped with auto-negotiated ad space, so when you want, just turn the buttons on and then sponsors, fans, or patrons can buy a sponsor spot on your page, from £1 upwards. The more someone sponsors the higher up the page their picture ad goes, a bit like auction bidding. If you're not the highest bidder you still get on the page, just a little lower down.
Yes. You can upload whatever backgrounds, headers and title banners you like.
The BooServer styling has been specifically designed with this in mind, so you can choose shaded and misted glass panes (like this one) so you can still easily read text and operate the player functions, no matter what colours or images you style your pages with.
You can even embed your own full web page, leaving just the BooServer navigation bar at the top
1 Beep is 1 play or download of a 5MB track. You just buy a bucket of Beeps upfront from BooServer and then use them as you wish. E.g. you could use them to sell a short-film and give away some music tracks.
There's no official limit currently.
You can have as many projects as you like on one account (a project equates to an album or programme) and they'll all appear on your personal homepage for people to browse. We reserve the right to limit this or charge for excess depending on amounts hosted going forwards.
Remember we don't individually promote your work so if you have a promoter or label don't sack them..! We are not trying to replace other distribution channels, but complement them, and more importantly give more control directly to the artist or whoever owns their distribution rights. BooServer is a powerful tool for promotion and distribution and is built to tie in with and extend personal promotion and distribution networks, not ruin them!
DRM is only a reasonable way to protect digital content. We believe it's increasingly easy to circumvent, causes problems on some computers, can restrict revenue and for an online media player to work it needs to work on all computers.
So, you've probably guessed it, no we don't offer DRM.
BooServer operates a different content management structure to protect content:
For each of your project pages you have two playlists, a Public one, which plays (streams) publicly, and a Restricted one, which someone has to pay, subscribe or do something else to get access.
So you could have a sponsor-funded playlist of free to air tracks, or previews (the video ads/promos of people that sponsor your page are automatically available for you to add to your playlist) AND you can sell full and hi-resolution downloads of all your work.
This format allows you to distribute standard resolution versions of your work for free or ad-funded AND then paid-for content for those who want extras, or particularly hi-resolution versions from the same online venue.
Yes. To access this playlist and download, someone needs to either have paid you the requisite amount, or be given access permissions by you (access permissions you can set person by person)
BooServer has been designed to make it easier to promote and publicise new work without the need for any massive marketing budget. Features like "Send Media" lets you seed out your tracks to your fans, and if you want, lets them forward the downloads on too, You can buy spots on other publishers pages, or if you haven't any readies' just "Bookmark" their project..
Yes! Just click their sponsor button and get a picture ad on their page
On every Project Page there is a "Bookmark" button. When you Bookmark a project you'll get your picture on their page, it's free... it means you can get message updates from the project, and if you've got stuff you want to publicise it can act as a mini ad for you too. The most recent bookmarkers are at the top of the list. Of course you'll need a few quid to deliver your media but this shouldn't break the bank...
All the search results on BooServer are arranged by popular demand, so the more bookmarks and feeds a project has the, higher up the search results a project goes, so bookmarking, as well as promoting you, also promotes the person you bookmark.. It's a win-win which is nice!
You have complete approval over every peep image on your page - you'll be sent an email with the ad to approve it or refuse it whenever someone wants to buy your beeps
The voucher network is a simple method of ensuring users on the network is "above board". There's no bar or criteria, if BooServer vouches for you, you are then "BooVouched" and a green "V" appears on your page. Once you're vouched for, anyone you then vouch for is also "BooVouched", so you don't need to know anyone in particular or do anything, just have a good rep on the network and you'll be vouched.
Yes. The Top 8 Projects appear on the homepage and are updated live - the full top eighty can be seen by clicking through..
To be in the Top80 itself, you also need to be a vouched publisher on BooServer (see above).. as well as preventing indecent content this also means that creating lots of accounts and bookmarking yourself won't make any difference..
To publish on BooServer, you must be the originator and copyright holder for the work you publish, or the licensor.
IP Geo-Blocking is available on every project
Not by default. If an individual Publisher specifically allows it then you of course may.
To enable the easy sharing, sampling and remixing of music and video, we've included the "BooServer Commercial License" facility. You can specify the price you want to sell it at on your pages, and it allows the buyer to sample from any track in your playlist (not including complete tracks) and re-publish the derivative work on BooServer only, sale on other platforms and formats is not allowed under the licence. This allows an easy traceability of licensed users on the network.
If you haven't made your film or programme yet, consider getting music or clips off other members on the network! One-off re-use licence payments are much simpler and more rewarding for both parties than royalty based licensing in the main.
NO! Your BooServer Online Collection is private and your pages and player can only be accessed by you with your login and password. Your name isn't listed in the search results, it's a locked box.
To get a listing in the search results only, and be visible to people you contact on the network just change your account type from "Hidden" to "Private"
To publish work on the public network, just change your account from "Private" to "Public" (or "Group" if you are a group or label and want multiple sub-accounts)
Yes. You can un-publish individual projects, just select project-type "Archive".
Anything you want to make public
Anything you don't want to make public, and your login email and password.
We don't sell your email address nor send you unsolicited mail (spam) and we don't store any sensitve details such as card numbers (unless you detail it in your videos, music and publish it yourself on your pages)
